Jean Elsen sale 157, lot 575

This specimen was lot 575 in Jean Elsen sale 157 (Brussels, December 2023), where it sold for €360 (about US$464 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Jean III (1312-1355), AR gros au quadrilobe, juillet 1344, Anvers. D/ Dans un quadrilobe cantonné de quatre annelets, les armes écartelées de Brabant-Limbourg. En fin de légende: ANTWERPIEN'. R/ Croix courte et pattée. Double légende sur le tour. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, John III, 1312-55, silver groat of the quadrilobe of July 1344, Antwerp mint. Obverse: the quartered arms of Brabant and Limburg in a quadrilobe cantonned with four rings, ANTWERPIEN at the end of the legend; reverse: short cross pattée, double legends. Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This gros au quadrilobe was issued by Jean III for circulation in the duchy of Brabant. This was three generations befoe the Burgundians united Brabant with Flanders. Jean III, having outlived his three sons, left his domain to his daughter Joanna. Wikipedia comments,

"Joanna, Duchess of Brabant (24 June 1322 – 1 December 1406), also known as Jeanne, was a ruling Duchess (Duke) of Brabant from 1355 until her death. She was duchess of Brabant until the occupation of the duchy by her brother-in-law Louis II of Flanders. Following her death, the rights to the duchy of Brabant went to her great-nephew Anthony of Burgundy, son of Philip the Bold."
