Sincona sale 89, lot 513

This specimen was lot 513 in Sincona sale 89 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 375 CHF (about US$496 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BELGIEN Brabant, Herzogtum, Jean I. 1268-1294. 2 Sterling (2 Esterlin) o. J. (nach 1277), Brüssel. Gutes sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Partin Bank 52, München, November 1997, Los 7. (Belgium, duchy of Brabant, John I, 1268-94, undated double sterling or escalin, Brussels mint. Good very fine.)"

Wikipedia comments, "John I, also called John the Victorious (1252/1253 – 3 May 1294) was Duke of Brabant (1267–1294), Lothier and Limburg (1288–1294). During the 13th century, John I was venerated as a folk hero. He has been painted as the perfect model of a brave, adventurous and chivalrous feudal prince."
