Steve Album sale 51, lot 2644

This specimen was lot 2644 in Steve Album Auction 51 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2025), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "BINDRABAN: AR 1/4 rupee, 1859, portrait of Queen Victoria on obverse with katar to her left; local issue of Mathura, VF, R." This type was struck 1858-59 and 1867 along with half rupees and rupees. Bindraban was the site of a mint during the Maratha domination of the eighteenth century but these nineteenth century issues had no authority and likely circulated only locally.

Recorded mintage: unknown but not common.

Specification: 2.75-2.90 g, silver, this specimen 2.67 g.
