Stack's Bowers 2014 ANA sale, lot 1623

This specimen was lot 1623 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $4,993.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWITZERLAND. Bern. Ducat, 1788. PCGS MS-66 Secure Holder. Scarce one year type. Brilliant luster. Highly attractive and exceptionally choice. From the Ervin F. Bickley Collection of Swiss Coins." The climbing bear is the badge of Bern, Switzerland. This type, like all Bernese gold coins of the eighteenth century, is rare and expensive. Altho Friedberg says this issue and that of 1772 are the same type, the 1788 has a square shield and the 1772 has an oval shield.
