Sincona sale 68, lot 5173

This specimen was lot 5173 in Sincona sale 68 (Zürich, October 2020), where it sold for 8,000 CHF (about US$10,532 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Bern | Stadt und Kanton, Doppeldukat 1719, Bern. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich-FDC. (city and canton of Bern, double ducat of 1719, Bern mint. Very rare, Extremely fine-uncirculated.)"

This rare type was also struck in 1703. A half batzen (KM 91) and half ducat (KM 93) were also issued in 1719. This type, like all Bernese gold coins of the eighteenth century, is rare and expensive.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 7 g, 0.986 fine gold; this specimen 6.90 g.
