Bern 1618 dicken
This specimen was lot 4110 in Sincona sale 95 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 4,250 CHF (about US$5,891 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Bern, Stadt und Kanton, Dicken 1618, Bern. Seitlich eingebuchtetes Wappen. Rv. Nimbierter Doppeladler. D.T. 1137b, HMZ 2-192b. Sehr selten. Sehr schön. (Switzerland, canton of Bern, dicken of 1618, Bern mint. Obverse: indented arms; reverse: nimbate double headed eagle. Very rare, Very Fine.)"
This type was struck 1617-21; the 1618 is the rarest of the four dates. The dicken was 24 kreuzer or six batzen. The reverse legend, "+BERCHT:DVX:ZERIN:FVNDATOR", likely refers to Berthold V, last duke of Zähringen (r. 1186-1218).
Record mintage: unknown.
Specification: 7 g, silver, 30 mm diameter, this specimen 8.29 g.
