Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale, lot 73404
SB621-73404r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73404 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $55. The catalog description[1] noted, "BELIZE. Cent, 1986. PCGS SPECIMEN-67 Gold Shield. Scallop shaped. One of the earlier dates in the series, this interestingly shaped issue is quite robust, with some die polishing marks visible in the fields and a subtle frosted nature to the portrait. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." This specimen is one of a type struck for Belize 1976, 1979-83, 1986-2000, likely at London or Ottawa. Simultaneous with this circulation issue, the Franklin Mint was striking proofs of an entirely different design featuring the swallow tailed flycatcher. These were packaged in sets with the other denominations and mass-marketed to collectors in the United States, making them more familiar than the regular issue, which is rather drab.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.80 g, aluminum, 19.5 mm diameter, scalloped.

Catalog reference: KM-33a.
