Belgium 1994 franc
This type was struck at the Brussels mint 1994-2001 for Belgium. A similar type (KM 188) was struck with Dutch legends. The Brussels mint ceased operations in 2018 and Belgium now orders its coins from the Utrecht mint. King Albert II, depicted here, ruled 1993-2013. This specimen was lot 1542 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €380 (about US$529 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BELGIQUE, Royaume, Albert II (1993-2013), AV 1 franc, 1994 FR. Refrappe en or. Tranche lisse. Flan poli. (kingdom of Belgium, Albert II, 1993-2013, gold franc of 1994, French legends, restrike in gold, plain edge. Proof.)"
The SCWC and Numista do not mention the gold restrike, wherein an "R" replaces the usual mintmaster's privy mark, which would have been a scales in 1994. The circulation steel coin, being demonetized by the euro, is now worthless.
Recorded mintage: 75,060,000.
Specification: 2.75 g, nickel plated steel, 18 mm diameter, designed by Lejon Tits. This specimen gold, 3,20 g.
