This type was struck 1980-82 and 1989-93 along with large quantities of KM 160 with Flemish legends. Belgium, which split from the Netherlands in 1830 over religious issues (Protestant vs. Catholic), is further divided into French and Flemish speaking halves. Stirred up by demagogic politicians, the two sides occasionally erupt into violence.
Recorded mintage: 60,000,000.
Specification: 8.50 g, nickel bronze, 25.5 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 159.
