Jean Elsen sale 146, lot 1291

This specimen was lot 1291 in Jean Elsen sale 146 (Brussels, November 2020), where it sold for €120 (about US$175 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BELGIQUE, Royaume, Léopold Ier (1831-1865), AR 2 francs, 1856FR. 25e anniversaire de l'inauguration du roi. Belle patine. Petites taches. Superbe. (kingdom of Belgium, Leopold I, 1831-65, silver two francs of 1856, twenty-fifth anniversary of the coronation of the king. Nice toning, minor marks, Extremely Fine.)"

A copper five centimes and gold forty francs were issued on this occasion using this design. All are consigned to the Unusual World Coins as medallic coinage. Restrikes exist in medal and coin alignment.

Recorded mintage: 1,898.

Specification: 10 g, 0.835 fine silver, .268 troy oz ASW.
