Jean Elsen sale 164, lot 1352

This specimen was lot 1352 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €28,000 (about US$39,982 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BELGIQUE, Royaume, Léopold Ier (1831-1865), AR 5 francs, 1841. Pos. B. Lettres inclinées à d. De la plus haute rareté. Flan poli. Belle patine. État de conservation exceptionnel. Provient de notre vente 112, 17 mars 2012, 1007. Fleur de Coin. (kingdom of Belgium, Leopold I, 1831-65, silver five francs of 1841, position B. Of the highest rarity, proof finish, exceptionally preserved, Uncirculated.)"

This five francs 1832-44 with incuse edge lettering. The type with raised lettering, KM 3.2, was produced 1846-48. There aren't any common dates but this one may be proof only. Position A has the lettering facing the reverse and position B has the lettering facing the obverse.

Recorded mintage: unknown, may be a proof-only date.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, 37 mm diameter, incuse lettered edge.
