Belgium 1840 franc
This specimen was lot 755 in Jean Elsen sale 141 (Brussels, June 2019), where it sold for €3,800 (about US$5,036 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BELGIQUE, Royaume, Léopold Ier (1831-1865), AR 1 franc, 1840. Rare Exemplaire de qualité exceptionnelle. Flan poli. Belle patine colorée. Fleur de Coin. (kingdom of Belgium, Leopold I, 1831-65, silver one franc of 1840. Rare in this exceptional quality, proof, toned, Uncirculated.)"
This type was struck 1833-35, 1838, 1840-44 at the Brussels mint. The specification matches the French franc of Louis Philippe. This is a rare date but not the key.
