Künker sale 335, lot 3579

This specimen was lot 3579 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €260 (about US$340 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BAYERN, SEIT 1623 KURFÜRSTENTUM, SEIT 1806 KÖNIGREICH: Karl Theodor, 1777-1799. 10 Kreuzer 1790, München, auf das Vikariat. RR Vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Heidelberger Münzauktion, Herbert Grün 49, Heidelberg 2008, Nr. 1248. (Germany, electorate of Bavaria, Charles Theodore, 1777-99, ten kreuzer of 1790, for the vicariat, rare, extremely fine.)"

This ten kreuzer commemorates Karl Theodor's term as vicar of the empire after the death of emperor Joseph II. Unlike his ancestor Karl Albrecht, he made no attempt to seize the throne, which was essentially worthless anyway. Other 1790 vicariat coinage include a triple ducat (KM 599), a double ducat (KM 598), a ducat (KM 597), several thalers (KM 593, 594, 595), a half thaler (KM 590.1) and a twenty kreuzer (KM 588). Vicariat coinage was issued again on the death of Leopold II in 1792.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, 29 mm diameter, this specimen 3,90 g.

Catalog reference: KM 586, Hahn 356; Witt. 2398.
