Sincona sale 95, lot 4025

This specimen was lot 4025 in Sincona sale 95 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 5,250 CHF (about US$7,277 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Reichsmünzstätte Basel Friedrich, als Kaiser, 1452-1493. Goldgulden 1493, Basel. Reichsapfel in Dreipass. Rv. Madonna mit Kind von vorne, das Wappen von Philipp v. Weinsberg zu ihren Füssen. Am Ende der Umschrift die Jahreszahl. Sehr selten. Sehr schön. Prägeschwäche. (Switzerland, canton of Basel, imperial mint of Frederick III, goldgulden of 1493, Basel mint. Obverse: imperial orb in trilobe; reverse: Madonna and Child facing, the arms of Philipp v. Weinsberg at her feet, date at the end of the legend. Very rare, Very Fine, Partially weak striking.)"

Altho the Swiss cantons had won de facto independence from the Empire by the late fifteenth century, the fact was not officially recognized until 1648, when the confederation left the empire by the treaties of Westphalia which ended the Thirty Years War. Friedberg lists this type for 1491-93.
