Basel 1499 groschen
The first specimen was lot 5162 in Sincona sale 9 (Zürich, October 2012), where it sold for 150 CHF (about US$190 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Basel - Groschen 1499. Spätere Nachprägung mit rostigen Stempeln von 1901. 300 Exemplare geprägt. Vorzüglich. (Switzerland, canton of Basel, groschen of 1499, restruck in 1901 from rusty dies. 300 examples made. Extremely fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 4006 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 8,000 CHF (about US$11,604 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Basel, Stadt und Kanton, Halbdicken 1499, Basel. Wappen in doppeltem Achtpass. + GROSSVS [2 Röschen übereinander] BASILIENS' [2 Röschen übereinander] 1499. Rv. Auf Halbmond stehende Maria mit Jesuskind auf dem linken Arm. Dahinter Strahlen- und Flammenkranz. [Kl. Röschen] SALVE [2 Röschen übereinander] REGI NA [2 Röschen übereinander] MISE' [kl. Röschen]. Von grösster Seltenheit. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Kleiner Schrötlingsfehler und kleine Kratzer. Exemplar der Slg. Kunzmann, Auktion SINCONA 53, Zürich, Oktober 2018, Los 6056. Geprägt mit dem Stempelpaar des Grossus 1499. (Switzerland, canton of Basel, half dicken of 1499, Basel mint. Obverse: Coat of arms in a double octagon, legend "+ GROSSVS [2 roses one above the other] BASILIENS' [2 roses one above the other] 1499". Reverse: Mary standing on a crescent moon with the Christ Child on her left arm. Behind her, a wreath of rays and flames, legend [Small roses] SALVE [2 roses one above the other] REGI NA [2 roses one above the other] MISE' [small roses]. Of the highest rarity, Very Fine-Extremely Fine, Minor flan flaw and small scratches.)"
This rare type is probably a pattern. The dicken is much more available. Note the early "4" in the date.
