Aureo y Calicó sale 448, lot 198

This specimen was lot 198 in Aureo y Calicó sale 448 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 320 € (about US$418 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1652. Reaper's war. Barcelona. 1 sisè. Lluís XIV. Very rare, especially in this condition. MBC+ [choice very fine]. Ex Aureo & Calico 07/03/2014, no. 246." The reverse legend, "BARCINO ⚜ CIVI ✽", translates as "City of Barcelona." During the War of the Pyrenees (ended 1659), the French occupied Catalonia with the collaboration of the locals and struck coins there. This type was struck 1641-52 and is rare better than Fine.

Wikipedia comments, "The Siege of Barcelona took place between July 1651 and October 1652 during the Catalan Revolt when a large Spanish army descended on Barcelona and besieged the garrison made up of Catalans and French troops under Philippe de La Mothe-Houdancourt. The fifteen-month siege eventually ended with a Spanish victory, and the effective defeat of the Catalan Revolt which had lasted since 1640. Although French troops remained in parts of Catalonia for another seven years, no serious fighting took place, and in 1659 the Treaty of the Pyrenees was signed bringing a formal end to the conflict."
