This specimen was struck for Barbados by the Franklin Mint 1973-84. The Franklin Mint signed deals with many small countries (particularly Caribbean islands) to strike their coins in exchange for the right to market proof sets. The coins were well designed and well made but overproduced and the collecting public grew disenchanted with the volume of sets available. Today, few Franklin Mint issues are worth more than bullion. The Royal Mint is still striking the coin for Barbados to this day, the Franklin Mint having ceased coin production in the mid-eighties.
Recorded mintage: 36,000 proofs plus 6,208 uncirculated strikes.
Specification: copper-nickel, 17.5 mm.
Catalog reference: KM 12.
