Bahamas 1977-FM cent
This specimen was lot 73399 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "BAHAMAS. Cent, 1977-FM. Franklin Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-65 Gold Shield. Mintage: 713 (in specimen). Undoubtedly one of the finest known, this glistening Gem is surpassed by just three others in the PCGS population report. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." This specimen is one of a type struck at the Franklin Mint for the Bahamas 1974-85. In 1974 the bust of the queen was dropped in favor of the arms of the Bahamas. The Franklin Mint produced this denomination 1971-85. In 1985 the composition was changed to copper plated zinc (KM 59a), which design was used until 2004. The starfish reverse makes this coin a popular souvenir for sunburned tourists.
