Baden 1814-D thaler Dav-515
The first specimen was lot 589 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Baden. Taler, 1814-D. NGC MS-63. Finest certified specimen. Toned with varied iridescent hues. Nice strike with very sharp features. From the Rockaway Collection." The second specimen was lot 74521 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[2] noted, "GERMANY. Baden. Taler, 1814-D. Mannheim Mint. Karl Ludwig Friedrich. NGC VF-35. This coin without the stars in the obverse legend and more tightly spaced lettering than Dav-515. Satiny surfaces of deep argent gray with generous golden toning. Some weakness in the central reverse and commonly found fissures on the obverse at lower right." This type is listed for 1814-19 and is rather scarce for a nineteenth century thaler. The SCWC does not mention the engraver's initial "D" on the reverse but it is clearly there.
