Baden 1810-B thaler Dav-514
This specimen was lot 5293 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €3,200 (about US$4,454 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BADEN, BADEN-DURLACH, MARKGRAFSCHAFT, SEIT 1806 Grossherzogtum, Karl Friedrich, 1746-1811. Konv.-Taler 1810. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Min. justiert, winz. Stempelfehler, fast Stempelglanz. (Germany, grand duchy of Baden, Charles Frederick, 1746-1811, convention thaler of 1810. Scarce in this quality, minor adjustments, minor planchet flaws, about uncirculated.)"
This rare type was struck 1809-11. Napoleon rewarded the margrave of Baden's sycophantic loyalty by elevating him to grand duke and tripling his territory. The state survived until the collapse of the Wilhelmine empire in 1918.
