Baden-Durlach 1622 thaler Dav-6046
This specimen was lot 32569 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $4,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "Germany. Baden. Georg Friedrich Taler 1622 AU58 NGC. A lovely cabinet-toned selection of this elusive taler issue displaying soft pastel coloration, including highlights of iridescent blue and sunflower gold. Very lightly handled these past four centuries, with gleaming underlying luster residing throughout the fields. The offering represents the first of this type that we have had the honor of offering on auction. From the Amsterdam Collection." This one year type is one of several (Dav-6045, -6045A, -6046, -6047, -6048, -6048A, -6049) struck 1622-24. All are rare. Baden was divided into Baden-Baden and Baden-Durlach between 1515-1771. Badener issues are generally scanty prior to its enlargement in Napoleonic times.
