The first specimen was lot 32410 in Heritage sale 3073 (Chicago, April 2019), where it sold for $528. The catalog description[1] noted, "Portuguese Colony Counterstamped 1200 Reis ND (1887) XF Details (Cleaned) NGC. Displaying crowned GP counterstamp (AU Strong) on a Spanish 1813/2 M-IG 8 Reales of Ferdinand VII (cf. KM477; overdate unlisted). An ideal constellation of rarities--an already quite elusive Azores counterstamp finding itself on an apparently unpublished host type with an apparently unpublished overdate. The host, moreover, for its part possesses a handsome degree of eye-appeal, the surfaces lightly aged and toned, and evidence of cleaning remaining slight and unobtrusive." The SCWC notes that this counterstamp exists on a profusion of Portuguese and foreign coins. This host coin is not listed therein but it is unlikely that the listing was intended to be comprehensive. The second specimen was lot 21347 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $2,280. The catalog description[2] noted, "AZORES. Azores - Peru. 1200 Reis, ND (1887). Luiz I. NGC AU-58. Issued by decree of 31 March 1887. Countermark: Small crown above GP within circular incuse. Applied to the obverse of a 1808-LIMEA JP Peru bust 8 Reales of Charles IIII (IV) (KM-97). A fairly RARE type, this elegantly toned specimen yields an impressively strong countermark placed near the center of the obverse, across the neck of the Spanish monarch. Quite alluring quality or the host, given that the countermark was applied nearly 8 decades after the coin itself was struck." The third specimen was lot 40273 in the same sale, where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[2] noted, "AZORES. Azores - Brazil. 1200 Reis, ND (1887). Luis I. NGC AU-53. Issued by decree of 31 March 1887. Countermark: Crowned G.P. (Governo Portugues) with circle. Applied to a 1817-R Brazil 960 Reis of Joao VI (KM-307.3)."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.896 fine silver (host coin).

Catalog reference: cf. KM29.3 (host undocumented). The second specimen is KM-29 (for countermark type); Gomes-L1.21.10. The third specimen is KM-29.2; Gomes-L1.15.01.
