This specimen was lot 1341 in Jean Elsen sale 152 (Brussels, September 2022), where it sold for €160 (about US$193 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, ETATS PONTIFICAUX, Martin V (1417-1423), (Oddone Colonna), AR carlin (gros), Avignon. D/ Le pape trônant de f. sur deux lions, bénissant et ten. une croix. R/ Les clés de saint Pierre en sautoir sous une colonne. Flan court. Très Beau. (France, Papal States, Martin V, 1417-23, silver carlino or grosso, Avignon mint. Obverse: the pope enthroned over two lions, blessing and holding a cross; reverse: the crossed keys of St. Peter over a column. Tight flan, Very Fine.)"

The election of Martin V ended the Great Schism which divided the church since 1378. Altho he did go to Rome, violence there forced him to spend most of his reign in Avignon. Coinage struck there included a gold florin, silver carlin (shown here) and billon deniers and douzains.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 2.59 g, 0.917 fine silver, this specimen 2,02 g.
