Jean Elsen sale 115, lot 1375

This specimen was lot 1375 in Jean Elsen sale 115 (Brussels, December 2012) where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,984 including buyer's fees). The catalog description^[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Marie-Thérèse (1740-1780), AV souverain, 1777, Bruxelles. Troisième type. Droit: B. voilé à droite. Revers: Ecu ovale d'Autriche-Bourgogne, couronné, sur une croix de Bourgogne. Provient de notre vente 109, 18 juin 2011, 940. Très Rare. Fine griffe au droit et légères traces de monture. presque Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, Maria Theresia (1740-80), gold souverain, 1777, Brussels mint, third type. Obverse: veiled bust to right; reverse: crowned oval shield of Austria-Burgundy over a Burgundian cross. Very rare, fine scratches on the obverse and light traces of mounting, nearly extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1770-77 with previous types struck 1756-66 (see Fr-134). The souverain d'or was struck under Maria Theresia's successors until 1798, when the Austrian Netherlands was occupied by the French. None are cheap. This date is listed in the SCWC as a half souverain d'or.
