Austrian Netherlands 1756-W WI souverain d'or Fr-420
This specimen was lot 20147 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIAN NETHERLANDS. 2 Souverain d'Or, 1756-W WI. Maria Theresa. NGC MS-61. An impressive representative of this scarce issue with brassy-gold coloration and hints of deeper honey hues. Sharply struck and free from notable abrasions, this is the only example of the type certified by NGC. The fields are considerably reflective and contrast the more richly frosted design elements." This type was struck 1756-61. It is debatable whether this counts as a Belgian coin at all, being a product of the Vienna mint in Austria. A similar type (KM 24) was, however, struck at Antwerp and Brussels. The denomination was issued until 1798, by which time the Low Countries were under French occupation.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 11.06 g, 0.919 fine gold.
Catalog reference: KM 23, Fr-420; Herinek-321.
