Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73114
SB1123-73114r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73114 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRIA. 2 Heller, 1897. Vienna Mint. Franz Joseph. PCGS MS-66 Brown. Conditionally quite SCARCE for the issue and nearing Red Brown in appearance, with swathes of mint red remaining in areas." This type was struck 1892-1915 as part of the reform which decimalized Austrian coinage in the last years of the Hapsburg regime. The mintages are generally large and most dates are common. This example realized twelve times the catalog value. One hundred heller made a corona or krone, units still in use in the Czech Republic.

Recorded mintage: 98,000,000.

Specification: 3.35 g, bronze, 19 mm diameter, plain edge.

Catalog reference: Herinek 60, Veselý 140, KM-2801.
