Austria 1838-E ducat Fr-226
This specimen was lot 886 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it sold for 825 CHF (about US$1,257 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RDR / ÖSTERREICH Ferdinand I. 1835-1848. Dukat 1838 E, Karlsburg. Vorzüglich. (empire of Austria, Ferdinand I, 1835-48, ducat of 1838, Karlsburg mint. Extremely Fine.)"
This type was struck 1837-48 in substantial numbers from Vienna (Fr-481), Kremnitz (Fr-225), Karlsburg (shown here) and Venice. Some authorities list this issue under Hungary but it differs only in mintmark from the Vienna product. Ferdinand, though often dismissed as mentally deficient, was actually a severe epileptic, whose frequent seizures interfered with his ability and confidence to rule. He abdicated during the revolution of 1848 but survived until 1870.
