Austria 1672 5 ducats Fr-314
This specimen was lot 1090 in Sincona Auction 100 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 40,000 CHF (about US$60,288 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"RDR / ÖSTERREICH Leopold I. 1657-1705. 5 Dukaten 1672, Graz. Ohne Münzmeisterzeichen. LEOPOLDVS. - .D.G.R.I.S.A.G.H.(TE).B.REX Belorbeerte und geharnischte Büste nach rechts, oben die Jahreszahl. Rv. .ARCHI.AVS.DVX. - BVR.STYRI(AE).(TE)c. Gekröntes Wappen in einer Kartusche mit Goldenem Vlies. Von grösster Seltenheit. Vorzüglich. Leicht gewellt. (Holy Roman Empire, Leopold I, 1657-1705, five ducats of 1672, Graz mint, without mintmaster's initials. Obverse: laureate and armored bust right, date above; reverse: crowned arms in a cartouche, order chain around. Of the highest rarity, Extremely Fine, Slightly wavy flan.)"
Of the four dates known for this rare type, 1670-72 and 1690, this is the only one without initials. We have posted a 1676 five ducats from Graz which used a different bust and had the date on the reverse.
