Sincona sale 76, lot 1413

This specimen was lot 1413 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 4,500 CHF (about US$5,642 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE - AUSTRIA. Erzherzog Ferdinand Karl, 1632-1662. Taler 1662, Hall. Jahreszahl über der Krone. Sehr selten. Vorzüglich-FDC. NGC MS62. Prachtvolle Erhaltung mit herrlicher Patina. (Holy Roman Empire, archduke Ferdinand Charles, 1632-62, thaler of 1662, Hall mint, date under the crown. Very rare, Extremely fine-uncirculated, Beautiful condition with magnificent patina.)"

This type was struck 1662 only and is rather expensive. It was struck for the archduke Ferdinand Karl rather than the emperor, and Ferdinand Karl was the last archduke allowed to strike his own coinage. Similar thalers include issues of 1646 (Dav-3365), 1652 (Dav-3366) and 1654 (Dav-3367).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.84 g.

Catalog reference: KM 932.4, Moser/Tursky 516. Dav-3368.
