Sincona sale 11, lot 2318

This specimen was lot 2318 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it sold for 500 CHF (about US$619 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR/ÖSTERREICH Ferdinand I. 1521-1564. Taler zu 72 Kreuzer 1560, Klagenfurt. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Austria, Ferdinand I, 1521-64, thaler of 72 kreuzer of 1560, Klagenfurt mint. Very fine to extremely fine.)"

This particular type is a very early thaler, struck 1558-60, and is a product of the Klagenfurt mint in Tyrol. Davenport lists over 130 different thalers for Austria in the sixteenth century.
