Australia 1997 dollar KM-327

In 1966, Australia abandoned the sterling coinage she had used since the days of Captain Cook and adopted the decimal dollar and cent. This bust of the queen was used 1985-98. This dollar commemorates aviation pioneer Sir Charles Kingsford Smith, who was killed in 1935 attempting to circumnavigate Australia. An NCLT exists of this design struck in silver (KM 327a) along with another commemorative showing Sir Charles, his plane and a map (KM 355).

Recorded mintage: 24,381,000 plus 142,078 for collector sets (BU plus proofs).

Specification: 9 g, aluminum bronze, 25 mm diameter, segmented reeded edge.
