Stack's Bowers 2019 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71059
Australia SB1019-71059r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71059 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRALIA. Florin, 1926. Melbourne Mint. PCGS AU-53 Gold Shield. A handsome, lightly circulated example, offering a deep tone and only minor handling on the high points. The peripheries are aglow with a pleasing golden brilliance." Australia maintained the sterling silver standard until 1945, years after Great Britain had debased her coins to 0.500 fine. A commemorative (KM 31) honoring the opening of the new Parliament in Canberra, was extensively saved and is today much more available than the regular issue (KM 27). Both Sydney and Melbourne struck florins in 1926 but as mintmarks were not used, their products are indistinguishable.

Recorded mintage: 2,487,000.

Specification: 11.31 g, 0.925 fine silver, 28.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-27.
