Sincona sale 86, lot 1704

This specimen was lot 1704 in Sincona sale 86 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$404 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Victoria, 1837-1901. Half Sovereign 1899 M, Melbourne. 3.95 g. Old veiled bust, St. George reverse. 134 denticles in beaded border. Extremely rare. NGC XF45. Tied with one other for second finest certified by NGC."

This type was struck 1893-1901 at Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. This is a better date. Some dates were issued only in proof and are rare.

Recorded mintage: 90,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 3.99 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 3.97 g.
