This specimen was lot 2316 in Goldberg sale 98 (Los Angeles, June 2017), where it sold for $494. The catalog description[1] noted, "Australia. Sovereign, 1879-M. Victoria. St. George reverse. NGC graded MS-62. WINGS." This "St. George" type was struck 1871-87 at the Sydney and Melbourne mints simultaneously with the familiar "shield" type, altho Melbourne struck no shield reverse sovereigns in 1879. The SCWC does not attempt to separate the mintages of the two types.

Recorded mintage: 2,740,000.

Specification: 7.99 g, 0.917 fine gold, .2354 troy oz AGW.
