This specimen was lot 40327 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[1] noted, "Once Part of the Millennia & Goodman Collections, GERMANY. Augsburg. Taler, 1624. Free City (in the name of Ferdinand II). PCGS MS-62 Gold Shield. A fairly RARE type, especially when encountered in such an elevated state of preservation as is the case here. The only example of the date certified in the PCGS census, this dazzling, nearly-choice crown offers a smoky, gunmetal gray tone and great underlying brilliance. Ex: Millennia Collection (Goldberg 46 - 5/2008) Lot # 558. Ex: Irving Goodman Collection (Goldberg 15 - 6/2002) Lot # 294." This type was struck 1624 only along with Dav-5011, -5013 and -5014. The city of Augsburg did not produce thalers on a regular basis but went thru a burst of activity in the 1620's, resulting in several issues common today.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-5012; KM-26.1.
