Ascension Island 2016-PM crown
This specimen was lot 33011 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2024), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "ASCENSION ISLAND. Crown, 2016-PM. Surrey (Pobjoy) Mint. Elizabeth II. NGC PROOF-70. A red colorized 175th Anniversary commemorative of the "Penny Red" postage stamp." This NCLT does not appear in our edition of the SCWC, so we take the auctioneer's attribution on faith. While we are familiar with anodized aluminum and anodized niobium, we haven't seen anodized copper-nickel before (the anodizing process allows the metallic surface to accept dyes). The Pobjoy mint closed in 2023 after 53 years in business.
