Arles (1351-61) florin Fr-24
This specimen was lot 99031 in Heritage sale 61253 (Dallas, January 2022), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "France: Arles. Étienne II de la Garde gold Florin d'Or ND (1351-1361) AU Details (Cleaned) NGC. (star) S • AREL' | ARChP, stylized lily / S IOHA | NNES • B •, St. John the Baptist, nimbate and mantled, standing facing, cross-tipped scepter with pellet in left hand, raising right in benediction, S above. A generally scarce feudal type from the Archbishopric of Arles, fielding finely executed details and trace underlying luster." At this time, the popes were residing in neighboring Avignon and struck very similar florins (Fr-29). Both are copied from the florin of Florence (Florence (1347) florin Fr-275|Fr-275]]).
