Argentina 1979 50 pesos KM-84
This specimen is one of a type struck in 1979 for Argentina at the Buenos Aires mint. This coin marks the conquest of Patagonia, which was completed by committing genocide on the native Indians and turning the resulting vacant land over to rich ranchers. Another fifty pesos of 1979 honored the bicentennial of the birth of liberator of José de San Martin. Argentina was to suffer from bouts of hyperinflation for forty years, impoverishing a once prosperous region. In 1970, 100 old pesos = 1 new peso; in 1983, 10000 pesos = 1 peso argentino; in 1985, 1000 pesos argentinos = 1 austral. Another reform would occur again in 1992.
