This specimen is one of a type struck 1951-53 for Argentina at the Buenos Aires mint. The issue of 1951-52 was copper nickel with a reeded edge (shown here) and the issue of 1952-53 was nickel plated steel with a plain edge. Both are essentially worthless in all grades. Strangely, this material substitution was not done with the similar five centavos (KM 46).
Recorded mintage: 67,328,000 of KM 47 (copper-nickel) plus 33,240,000 of KM 47a (nickel plated steel).
Specification: 3 g, copper-nickel (KM 47) or nickel plated steel (KM 47a), 19.3 mm diameter, reeded or plain edge, designed by Mario Baiardi (1909-72).
Catalog reference: KM 47 or 47a.
