Argentina 1888 centavo rev DSLR.jpg

The first specimen was lot 71144 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $360. The catalog description[1] noted, "ARGENTINA. Centavo, 1888. PCGS MS-64 Red Brown. Boasting delightful and consistent bronze-red surfaces that are likely just one shade darker than required for a Red designation, this Centavo is appealing and enticing for the grade. Generous satin luster sweeps across the flan, uninterrupted by marks or nicks. A stalwart piece that will tempt series specialists." This specimen is one of a type struck 1882-96 for Argentina, at the Paris mint or in Buenos Aires with French dies. The type is common but nice uncirculated specimens are undervalued. It is accompanied by a bronze two centavos, a silver ten centavos, twenty centavos, fifty centavos and peso. The one centavo was not struck again until 1939.

Recorded mintage: 413,000, a slightly better date.

Specification: 5 g, bronze, 25 mm diameter, plain edge, designed by Eugéne-André Oudiné (1810-1887).

Catalog reference: KM 32.
