Antwerp 1814-W 10 centimes
This specimen was lot 34223 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $960. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Obsidional Issues. Siege of Antwerp. 10 Cents, 1814-W. Antwerp (Wolschot) Mint. Napoleon I. PCGS MS-63 Brown. Struck 20 March-1 April. Variety with "III" within denomination. Despite numerous adjustment marks, this example remains Choice and enchanting, with some elegant brilliance evident around the devices. A SCARCE and intriguing variant with the three stray "III" marks to the lower left of the "0" in "10." From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Elmen in 2004 for $425). Ex: World-Wide Coins of California [James Elmen] XLV (5/2004) Lot # 33." This coin and a similar copper five centimes were issued by Napoleon's troops as they were besieged in Antwerp ("Anvers" in French) by the English, Prussians and Russians. Numerous varieties exist. This variety, mintmarked "W", is fairly common. This type is claimed by French and Belgian collectors.
