Angola 1783 4 macutas
This specimen was lot 74108 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $105. The catalog description[1] noted, "ANGOLA. 4 Macutas, 1783. Maria I and Pedro III. PCGS VF-35. A SCARCE type, the first we can recall offering in over a decade, and especially difficult in a problem-free state of preservation. Evenly worn throughout and toned a deep mahogany. From the Richard Margolis Collection." This type was struck for Angola in 1783-84 in Lisbon. Silver coins minted for Angola in the eighteenth century include two, four (shown here), six, eight, ten and twelve macutas. None are common, especially in undamaged condition.
