Angola 1770 12 macutas
This specimen was lot 42241 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $900. The catalog description[1] noted, "ANGOLA. 12 Macutas, 1763. Jose I (1750-77). NGC VF-35. RARE early date. All of the early issues from Angola had relatively small production runs with a higher outputs of copper pieces than their silver counterparts. Mintage figures don't seem to exist prior to about 1752 and are sporadic until about 1770 when there seems to be more consistency in documentation. Attractive old cabinet tone with a nice look." This type was struck 1762-63 and 1770. Silver issues in the eighteenth century included two, four, six, eight, ten and twelve macutas, most of them scarce.
