American National Bank of Santa Monica, California
large size $5
This specimen was lot 18284 in Heritage auction 354 (the Horwedel sale, Long Beach, CA, September 2004), where it sold for $2,185. The catalog description[1] noted, "Santa Monica, CA - $5 1902 Plain Back Fr. 609 The American NB Ch. # 12787. We've seen plenty of small notes from this bank, but large examples are quite difficult to find, no surprise in view of the very low $720 outstanding by 1935. The Horwedel specimen is certainly one of the nicest ones extant. Very Fine."
small size $5, type I
This specimen was lot 18285 in Heritage auction 354 (the Horwedel sale, Long Beach, CA, September 2004), where it sold for $431.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Santa Monica, CA - $5 1929 Ty. 1 The American NB Ch. # 12787. For some reason, Type one small examples are almost impossible to obtain from here, with only three of the 31 pieces reported to date fitting that description. This is one of just two fives, which, incidentally, bears the first type style used by the bank. Very Good."

This is the finest small size known of the 37 reported."
