This specimen was lot 3020 in Aureo y Calicó sale 422 (Barcelona, December 2023), where it sold for 18 € (about US$23 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Afganistán. 1989. 500 afghanis. Juegos Olímpicos - Barcelona '92. Hockey. AG. Proof." The Democratic Republic of Afghanistan was the Soviet-supported regime in Kabul 1978-92. It managed to issue a number of NCLT's during its tortured existence, including this and KM 1012 for the 1992 Olympics. The Soviets withdrew in 1989 and the regime collapsed under the attacks of the Taliban and other muhajideen groups.
