This specimen was part of lot 33301 in Heritage sale 3082 (New York, January 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Afghanistan: Republic 3-Piece Certified gold & silver "Conservation" Set 1978 NGC, 1) "Snow Leopard" 250 Afghanis - PR69 Ultra Cameo NGC; 2) "Siberian Crane" 500 Afghanis - PR68 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM 981; 3) gold "Marco Polo Sheep" 10000 Afghanis - MS69 NGC; The gold 10000 Afghanis without a Proof finish, nonetheless a set matched for impeccable technical quality." This NCLT, issued to promote wildlife conservation and the World Wildlife Fund, was sold in sets with a silver 500 afghanis (KM 981) and gold 10,000 afghanis (KM 982). The uncirculated issue was struck in billon and the proofs struck in sterling silver (shown here).

Recorded mintage: 4,370 + 4,387 proofs.

Specification: 28.28 g, 0.500 fine silver, 38.6 mm diameter. Proofs were struck in 0.925 fine silver.
