This specimen was lot 2998 in Stephen Album sale 38 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRENCH INDOCHINA: AE 2 sapeque, 1898-A, better date, tiny dig in obverse field, Fine to VF." This type was struck 1887-89, 1892-1902 as a two sapeque, as can be seen by the Chinese character for "2" ("ニ") on the reverse. While the proofs are rare, the circulation issue is only somewhat scarce.
Recorded mintage: 2,171,000, a scarce date.
Specification: bronze.
Catalog reference: KM-6.
