Sincona sale 46, lot 277

This specimen was lot 277 in Sincona sale 46 (Zurich, May 2018), where it sold for 170 CHF (about US$204 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Preussen, Königreich, Wilhelm I. 1861-1888. 5 Mark 1877 A, Berlin. Sehr schön. Kleine Kratzer. (kingdom of Prussia, William I, 1861-88, gold five mark of 1877, Berlin mint. Very fine, Small scratches.)"

After striking silver five marks 1874-76, gold five marks were issued from the Berlin, Breslau and Cleve mints 1877-78. The type does not seem to have been a success, as the denomination was suspended and silver five mark resumed in 1888.

Recorded mintage: 1,218,718.

Specification: 1.99 g, .900 fine gold, this specimen 1.96 g.
