Guatemala 1865-R peso

from the Mountain Groan Collection

This peso with the head of Rafael Carrera was struck in Guatemala in 1862-65. Later types, struck 1866-71 after his death, bear the legend "RAFAEL CARRERA FUNDADOR DE LA Ra DE GUATEMALA." This type is common in circulated condition. It was superseded by the slouched Liberty type struck 1872-79 and 1894-97.
