This specimen was struck for the Southwestern Pacific island of New Caledonia by the Paris mint, which has issued this type sporadically since 1973. New Caledonia is a major site of nickel mining. This coin shares a common obverse with other types issued for various French colonies, such as French Polynesia (Tahiti) and the New Hebrides.
